Call a Lawyer!

Every week I get a call with a variation on the same theme: “Something happened (legally related), and I did so and so (without calling a lawyer) and I am not happy with the outcome.”

In the most recent version, caller was upset because they got a ticket for something they did not think they did, went to court without an attorney, and things did not go their way. Why is it surprising to people that they are not legal experts, but think they can go into a courtroom and will get positive results? They don’t know the law. They don’t know the rules of evidence. They don’t know the Judge and what he is likely looking for. They don’t know legal procedures. But yet, they try to be their own lawyer, and get bad results. People would not give themselves root canals if their tooth was in pain or wouldn’t remove their own appendix, but yet, they go to a courtroom and try to argue their case to a judge, or call the DA and try to negotiate a deal that they don’t know is fair, or try to draft their own legal documents in a divorce without knowing exactly what needs to be included.

Most lawyers in Enid have free consultations. Hiring a lawyer can be expensive, sure, but so is getting a worse deal from the ADA, or being found guilty when you aren’t. Lawyers go to school for a long time to study procedures and concepts and how to research the law. They are experts in their fields and without one, don’t be surprised if things don’t go your way. And better yet, hire an attorney that is familiar with the county the case will be in and the type of law the case deals with. You don’t want a bankruptcy attorney handling your DUI case or a lawyer from Durant handling your Garfield County divorce. Not only do they not know the local rules, they don’t know what the judge is likely to do in certain common cases.

So remember, it may not seem like a big deal, but it can be a HUGE deal later. Call a local, experienced lawyer in your area before you try anything on your own. You won’t regret it. And if you are in Garfield or a surrounding County, call Faulk Law Firm for a FREE consultation! If you decide to hire us, we often have payment plans available as well!
